BSc Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the study of how human societies are organised, how they change and how social structures shape individual lives. It asks why inequalities persist across generations, how institutions reproduce or challenge power, what holds communities together and what drives them apart, and how categories such as class, race, gender and age become meaningful through social practice. The discipline is both analytical and deeply engaged with the world as it is, offering frameworks for understanding everything from intimate relationships to global economic systems. At the University of Bristol, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a thorough introduction to the social sciences before you move into the core content of the degree. You will engage with classical and contemporary sociological theory, develop your skills in research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, and apply sociological thinking to a wide range of substantive areas including work, family, crime, health, media and social movements. Bristol is one of the leading research universities in the UK, and its sociology department brings real scholarly depth to teaching across the discipline. Sociology graduates go on to diverse careers in which understanding social processes and human behaviour is an asset. Common destinations include the civil service, social research, public health and health services, education, social work and welfare services, journalism and media, campaign organisations, local government and management. The research skills and analytical awareness the degree develops are valued in any context where organisations need to understand the people they work with or serve. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, public policy or related fields.
