BSc Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the scientific study of human society, examining how social structures, institutions, inequalities, and cultural forces shape the lives of individuals and communities. It asks questions that are at once deeply personal and fundamentally political: why do some groups experience poverty, discrimination, or ill health at higher rates than others? How do religion, family, and education reproduce or challenge existing patterns of power? What happens when social norms are challenged or institutions fail? These are questions that sociology approaches with empirical rigour and theoretical sophistication, drawing on quantitative and qualitative research methods to understand social life from the inside. At Teesside University, this three-year, full-time programme provides a thorough academic grounding in sociological theory and research. You will develop the skills that higher education and professional employment demand, including the ability to search for and critically evaluate evidence, to think analytically about complex social phenomena, to communicate clearly in writing and presentation, and to work effectively both independently and in groups. The curriculum engages with the major traditions of sociological thought alongside the empirical study of contemporary social issues, providing the knowledge base and methodological toolkit for a wide range of careers and further study. Graduates of Sociology work in social research, public policy, social care, health services, education, community development, journalism, the voluntary sector, and human resources. Many pursue postgraduate study in sociology, social work, public health, criminology, or related fields, building specialist expertise for research or professional practice. The analytical and communicative skills that sociology develops are valued broadly across any sector in which understanding people, institutions, and social context is a professional requirement.
