About this course

Sociology is the discipline that studies society: how it is organised, how it changes, and how the structures, institutions, and processes that make up social life shape individual experience and collective outcomes. It asks why some groups have more power or resources than others, how social norms are created and enforced, what happens when social arrangements are contested, and how large-scale forces like capitalism, globalisation, and technology transform the way people live. It is a critical discipline, in the sense that it challenges taken-for-granted assumptions and asks uncomfortable questions about inequality and power. At Aberystwyth this three-year full-time degree trains you to develop a critical awareness of and engagement with the social world. You will build a thorough grounding in the key sociological perspectives, both historical and contemporary, that scholars have used to understand society, from classical thinkers such as Marx, Weber, and Durkheim through to contemporary feminist, postcolonial, and intersectional approaches. Alongside this theoretical training, you will develop your ability to analyse social phenomena through practical skills in the collection, analysis, and presentation of sociological data, using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The programme develops critical thinking and research skills that are applicable across a very wide range of professional contexts. Sociology graduates go on to careers in social research, policy, education, social work, community development, public health, journalism, human resources, and the voluntary sector. The discipline's emphasis on understanding social systems and human behaviour is valued across many fields beyond those directly concerned with social issues. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social work, or related disciplines, developing specialist expertise in areas such as health inequalities, criminology, or urban studies.
