BSc Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the discipline that asks why the world is organised the way it is, who benefits from that organisation, and how it changes over time. It examines the social forces, structures, and institutions that shape individual lives, from class, race, and gender to the labour market, the welfare state, the media, and global economic systems. Studying sociology means developing a critical, evidence-based way of thinking about the social world that takes nothing for granted and insists on asking whose interests a given arrangement serves. At City St George's in London you will study this three-year full-time programme, examining both the local forces that shape life in one of the world's most diverse and unequal cities and the global dynamics that connect it to the rest of the world. You will engage with social theory, from classical thinkers through to contemporary debates, alongside research methods in both qualitative and quantitative traditions, developing the ability to design and conduct sociological inquiry and to evaluate evidence critically. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial real-world and international experience alongside your academic study. This combination of London-based learning and structured professional exposure makes for a distinctive and career-relevant education. Sociology graduates develop analytical, research, and communication skills that are valued across a wide range of sectors. Careers in social research, policy, community development, education, journalism, public relations, the civil service, human resources, and the charitable sector are all common destinations. The ability to understand and analyse social phenomena is also valued in healthcare, housing, criminal justice, and the many organisations that work on inequality, diversity, and social justice. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or a related field.
