BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the study of human society: how it is organised, how it reproduces itself, how it changes, and who benefits or suffers from the structures it produces. It is a discipline that refuses comfortable assumptions, asking critical questions about inequality, power, identity, culture, institutions, and social change. Whether the subject is gender, race, class, religion, family, work, crime, or the digital transformation of everyday life, sociology develops the analytical tools to look beneath the surface and understand the social forces at work. At Bangor University this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year for those who need additional academic preparation before entering the main programme. The degree also includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement component, meaning you will have substantial structured opportunities to develop professional experience and to study in an international context before you graduate. Bangor's location in North Wales gives the degree a distinctive regional and cultural dimension, with Welsh society and language forming an interesting case study in the cultural and political dynamics the discipline examines. The typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the academic standard expected of students entering the programme. You will develop research skills, the ability to construct sociological arguments, and the capacity to engage critically with evidence about social life. You will learn to think through different theoretical perspectives, to apply them to concrete social phenomena, and to communicate your analysis clearly and persuasively. Graduates of sociology degrees go on to careers in social research, policy, social work, the voluntary sector, education, journalism, public administration, human resources, community development, and the NHS. Postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or social work is a common next step for those who want to specialise or pursue academic research.
