Sociology and modern languages is a combination that brings the social scientific analysis of society together with linguistic access to a world beyond the English-speaking mainstream. Sociology asks how societies are organised, how inequality and power operate, and how culture, institutions, and social structures shape what people do and what is available to them. Modern languages add the dimension of genuine cultural reach, developing linguistic competence in one or more languages and the ability to engage with societies on their own terms, through their own texts, conversations, and institutions. At the University of Exeter, this full-time, three-year programme combines rigorous sociological analysis with serious language study and a year abroad, providing immersive linguistic and cultural experience that gives the combination a depth it could not otherwise have. You will engage with the full range of sociological perspectives, theories, and methods, while also developing high-level competence in your chosen language or languages and genuine familiarity with the cultures they access. The year abroad is central to the degree, ensuring that your language learning is grounded in real cultural immersion rather than purely classroom-based study. The programme also includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates from sociology and modern languages programmes are well placed for careers in international organisations, the diplomatic service, NGOs and development agencies, journalism, academic research, teaching, social research and policy, and any sector where the combination of sociological understanding and cross-cultural linguistic competence is an asset.
