About this course

Social work is a profession driven by a commitment to human rights, social justice and the wellbeing of people who are vulnerable, marginalised or disadvantaged. Social workers intervene in the most complex and sensitive situations in people's lives, working with children at risk of harm, adults with disabilities or mental health conditions, families in crisis, older people requiring support, and communities affected by poverty and inequality. The work is intellectually and emotionally demanding, requiring strong analytical skills, clear ethical thinking, the ability to navigate legal frameworks, and the personal resilience to remain effective in challenging circumstances. At the University of Salford this three-year full-time programme leads to a qualification recognised by Social Work England, the professional regulator for social work in England, which is required to practise as a registered social worker. Salford is located in Greater Manchester, one of the most socially and culturally diverse urban areas in the UK, and the programme is shaped by that context. You will undertake significant periods of assessed practice in placement settings, working with real service users and agencies under the supervision of qualified practitioners, as this is an indispensable part of professional formation that no amount of academic study can replace. Please note that the programme is currently under review for September 2027 entry, and some elements of the course structure and content may change. You will study social work theory, law and policy, human development, safeguarding, anti-oppressive practice, research methods and the professional values and ethics that define the social work role. Graduates register with Social Work England and work in local authority and voluntary sector settings, including children's services, adults' services, mental health teams and community care. Career progression leads to senior practitioner, team manager and specialist roles. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study or move into research, education or policy roles in the social care sector.
