MSci Social Work
About this course
Social work is a profession dedicated to supporting people at some of the most difficult moments in their lives: when they are in poverty, in crisis, in danger, or when the conditions of their life make it hard to flourish. Social workers work with children and families, with older adults, with people with disabilities, with those experiencing mental health difficulties, and with many others, often in complex multi-agency contexts that require professional judgment, legal knowledge, and the ability to form trusted relationships under pressure. It is a demanding and deeply purposeful profession, and the degree that prepares you for it must take both the intellectual and the human dimensions of the role seriously. At the University of Huddersfield, this four-year, full-time programme is approved by Social Work England and prepares you for professional registration as a social worker. You will study social work theory, law, policy, and practice across the key areas of the discipline, developing an evidence-based understanding of how people's lives are shaped by social conditions and how professional intervention can make a positive difference. Practice placements in different statutory and voluntary settings are integrated throughout the programme, giving you direct supervised experience of social work in action and allowing you to develop your professional identity, skills, and ethical judgment in real contexts. Social work is a regulated profession in the UK, and successful completion of an approved programme is required for registration with Social Work England, which is required to practise. Graduates go on to work in local authority children's and adult services, NHS mental health teams, voluntary organisations, and a range of other settings. Many progress into specialist roles, supervisory positions, and management over the course of their careers. Social work is one of the most directly impactful of all professions, and Huddersfield's programme prepares you for it with both intellectual rigour and practical depth.
