BA Social and Political Sciences
About this course
Social and political sciences brings together the study of society and the study of power, two endeavours that are deeply interconnected and that draw on a shared toolkit of theoretical frameworks and research methods. Sociology investigates how social structures, institutions, and processes shape people's lives and opportunities, examining inequality, culture, identity, and the dynamics of social change. Political science analyses how power is organised and exercised, how political institutions and systems function, how policy is made and contested, and how political behaviour and ideas relate to broader social conditions. Studied together, they provide a rich and critical understanding of the world as it actually is and the forces that are changing it. Birkbeck College specialises in part-time and evening study, which means this three-year degree is structured to be accessible to people who are working or who have other commitments during the day. The programme covers the major traditions in sociological and political theory, the research methods used across the social sciences, and a range of substantive topics including inequality and social stratification, contemporary British and comparative politics, international relations, social movements, and the politics of race, gender, and class. Critical engagement with theory and evidence is central to the approach, and you will develop strong skills in analytical writing and argument that are valued across many professional contexts. Birkbeck's location in central London provides access to the cultural and political life of the capital alongside your studies. Graduates in social and political sciences enter a wide range of careers. Public policy, government, and the civil service are natural destinations, as are roles in research, think tanks, and political organisations. The charity and voluntary sector, trade unions, and advocacy organisations offer careers for those who want to apply their knowledge to social change. Journalism, communications, and media roles draw on the analytical skills developed in the degree. Human resources, management consultancy, and business roles are also open to social science graduates, particularly those with strong research and analytical skills. Postgraduate study in sociology, politics, public policy, social research, or related fields is a common next step.
