MA Russian/Sociology
About this course
Russian and sociology is a combination that brings together one of the world's most strategically significant languages with one of the most important analytical frameworks for understanding human society. A degree in Russian allows you to study a language of strategic international significance while also gaining access to the richness of Russian culture, from Pushkin and Tolstoy through the Bolshevik Revolution, the Soviet era, and the complex realities of contemporary Russia. Sociology provides the analytical tools to understand how societies are organised, how social structures produce inequality and shape human life, and how institutions, culture, and power operate. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme develops your Russian language proficiency to an advanced level alongside a thorough grounding in sociological theory and research methods. You will read Russian literature and cultural texts, engage with the history and contemporary politics of the Russian-speaking world, and analyse social phenomena using the frameworks of sociology. A sandwich year with a work placement gives you direct professional experience in a relevant field. Entry typically requires around 184 UCAS tariff points. Graduates of Russian and sociology are well placed for careers in international affairs, journalism, the diplomatic service, social research, non-governmental organisations, the civil service, education, and any field where understanding Russian society and culture alongside broad social analytical skills is an advantage. The rarity of the combination is a genuine professional asset, particularly given the importance of Russia in contemporary international politics.
