MA Russian with Geography
About this course
Russian with geography is a combination that brings one of the world's major geopolitical languages together with the discipline best suited to understanding the vast territories and complex human landscapes through which it is spoken. Russian is an official language of the United Nations, the language of one of the world's most significant military and energy powers, and the lingua franca of a post-Soviet space stretching from the Baltic to Central Asia. Geography examines the physical and human dimensions of the world, combining natural science with social analysis to understand how environments, populations, economies and political structures interact across space. At the University of St Andrews you will study across four years of full-time study, including a year abroad that deepens your language ability and cultural understanding through direct immersion in a Russian-speaking context. You will develop grammatical accuracy and oral aptitude in Russian alongside deeper understanding of Russian-language cultures, histories and societies through literature, film, cultural history and contemporary society. The geography component adds spatial, environmental and socio-economic analysis, giving you tools to understand Russia and the post-Soviet space as physical and human landscapes as well as cultural and political ones. Graduates with Russian and geography skills are particularly well placed for careers in the diplomatic service, intelligence and security organisations, international organisations, think tanks, journalism, energy and natural resources sectors, environmental consulting and the private sector roles that require engagement with Russia and the former Soviet states. The geography component also opens routes into urban planning, environmental management, international development and GIS. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in Russian and East European studies, international relations, human geography or related fields.
