About this course

Russian and politics is a combination that has rarely been more relevant. Russia has reasserted itself as one of the defining forces in European and global politics, and understanding that country in any depth requires engagement with its language, literary and cultural tradition, and the historical and political forces that have shaped it. Russian is also a gateway to a vast Slavic and post-Soviet cultural and political world. Politics provides the analytical frameworks to understand how states are governed, how foreign policy is made, how international institutions function, and how power operates in democratic and authoritarian systems alike. At Queen Mary University of London this four-year full-time programme is jointly taught by the School of the Arts and the School of Politics and International Relations, combining two different but often complementary areas of interest into a single degree. You will develop Russian language skills alongside the political science content needed to understand Russian and post-Soviet politics, as well as broader comparative and international relations content. The degree is designed to produce graduates with deep knowledge of Russia's political culture and language alongside the analytical tools to engage with the discipline of politics more broadly. The typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the standard expected on entry to this combined programme. You will develop language proficiency, analytical rigour, research skills, and the cross-cultural awareness that both disciplines cultivate. Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy and the foreign service, journalism, international organisations, the civil service, risk analysis, intelligence work, academia, and international business. Postgraduate study in Russian and East European studies, international relations, politics, or translation is a natural continuation.
