BEng Robotic and Mechatronic Engineering (with an industrial placement year)
About this course
Robotic and mechatronic engineering combines mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science to design and build intelligent machines that can sense, process information, and act in the world. It is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of engineering, driving advances in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, defence, and space exploration. The discipline requires engineers who can think across traditional boundaries, integrating hardware and software, physical mechanisms and computational control, into coherent systems. This four-year, full-time programme begins with a foundation year that gives you a thorough grounding in the underlying scientific and mathematical principles before you progress to the main degree content. Across the programme you will study mechatronics, control engineering, embedded systems, autonomous vehicles, and robotics, developing both theoretical understanding and strong practical skills through laboratory and project work. The foundation year is designed to ensure that wherever you are starting from academically, you have the preparation you need to succeed at degree level and beyond. The programme builds the kind of systematic problem-solving ability and interdisciplinary thinking that engineering employers value highly. Graduates pursue careers in robotics design and development, automation and manufacturing engineering, autonomous systems research, embedded software engineering, and the aerospace and defence sectors. The growth of robotics in sectors such as healthcare, agri-tech, and consumer technology means demand for engineers with these skills continues to expand. Many graduates also choose to pursue postgraduate research, contributing to the development of next-generation robotic and intelligent systems.
