BA Religion, Philosophy and Ethics
About this course
Religion, philosophy, and ethics is a field that brings together three of the oldest and most persistently important areas of human enquiry. Religion examines the beliefs, practices, texts, and institutions through which human beings have sought meaning, community, and connection to what they regard as sacred or ultimate. Philosophy asks foundational questions about knowledge, reality, morality, and the nature of the mind, using argument and analysis as its primary tools. Ethics examines how we should act and how we should live, drawing on both philosophical reasoning and the moral traditions embedded in religious and cultural life. Together they address some of the deepest questions human beings face. The Open University offers this programme on a part-time basis through distance learning, making it accessible to students who cannot attend campus or who need to study flexibly around work and other commitments. You will engage with the major world religions, philosophical traditions from ancient Greece to the contemporary period, and the central debates in ethical theory, examining how religion, philosophy, and moral reasoning intersect and sometimes conflict. The Open University's approach provides carefully structured materials, online learning, and academic support, enabling serious study at a pace and in a context that suits your circumstances. Graduates from religion, philosophy, and ethics programmes go on to careers in education, the civil service, public policy, journalism, chaplaincy, community development, social work, research, and a wide range of roles in organisations concerned with ethics, diversity, and human wellbeing. The skills of careful argument, critical reading, and ethical analysis are valued across virtually every professional context in which people face complex human questions. Further study at postgraduate level in philosophy, theology, ethics, or related fields is also a common pathway, particularly for those moving towards academic research or professional roles in ethics and policy.
