BSc Quantity Surveying
About this course
Quantity surveying is the profession concerned with the commercial and financial management of construction projects. Quantity surveyors advise clients and contractors on the costs of building and civil engineering works, prepare and analyse tenders, manage contracts, value work done and settle final accounts, and play a central role in ensuring that construction projects are delivered to the highest standard within agreed budgets and contractual terms. It is a profession that combines technical knowledge of construction with strong commercial, legal and interpersonal skills. This three-year full-time degree at Sheffield Hallam University includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in a construction or property organisation as part of the programme. You will learn how to commercially manage and control construction projects from inception through design and tender to completion and settlement, developing expertise in cost planning, procurement, contract administration, dispute resolution and the legal and financial frameworks that govern construction projects. The placement year is integral to developing the professional competence and practical understanding of the industry that the qualification demands. Graduates are eligible to pursue professional qualification with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which is the standard route to becoming a chartered quantity surveyor, one of the most respected and well-remunerated professional qualifications in the construction sector. Quantity surveyors work for contractors, consultants, clients, developers, government agencies and specialist advisory firms across the full range of construction and infrastructure sectors. Further study at postgraduate level in quantity surveying, construction project management or real estate is an option for those seeking specialist or management roles.
