About this course

Psychology is the scientific study of mind, brain, and behaviour, asking how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and act, and why they sometimes do so in ways that cause distress or harm. Criminology brings psychology into direct dialogue with one of the most socially pressing fields of inquiry: the causes, nature, and consequences of crime, and society's responses to it. Together, they offer a combination that is both intellectually coherent and practically relevant, drawing on psychological science to understand criminal behaviour, victimisation, forensic investigation, and the design of justice and rehabilitation systems. At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of psychology as a scientific discipline alongside a grounded engagement with criminological theory and practice. You will study core areas of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, building the scientific literacy and research skills that underpin the discipline. Your criminology studies will explore theories of crime causation, the workings of the criminal justice system, victimology, and the psychology of offending and rehabilitation. Winchester's teaching is delivered by a supportive team of experienced lecturers and qualified applied psychologists and criminologists, giving you access to both academic expertise and professional experience. You will develop research skills in both quantitative and qualitative methods, the ability to critically evaluate psychological and criminological evidence, and the professional communication skills needed to work effectively in applied settings. Graduates of psychology with criminology go on to careers in the police service, probation, the prison service, social work, victim support, mental health services, forensic services, and research. The psychology component provides a pathway toward further qualifications in applied psychology, counselling, or clinical practice. Postgraduate study in forensic psychology, criminology, social work, or counselling is a well-supported route for those wishing to enter regulated professional roles.
