About this course

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, bringing together methods from neuroscience, statistics, social science, and philosophy to investigate questions that are both intellectually demanding and practically significant. Why do people make the decisions they do? How does memory work, and why does it sometimes fail? What are the causes and consequences of mental health difficulties? These are questions that matter for how we organise workplaces, design healthcare systems, and support one another in everyday life. The University of the Highlands and Islands offers this programme in part-time mode, designed for students who study most days of the week but take fewer course units per semester compared to full-time study, completing the degree over an extended period. This flexibility makes the programme genuinely accessible to those who are managing work, family, or other commitments alongside their studies. You will cover the core domains of psychology, including cognitive, social, biological, developmental, and clinical psychology, alongside research methods and statistics, which are central to the discipline and to meeting the standards required for graduate basis for registration with the British Psychological Society. Graduates of psychology degrees pursue careers in a wide range of sectors where understanding human behaviour is central. Routes into clinical, counselling, educational, occupational, and forensic psychology all require further postgraduate training, but the undergraduate degree provides the necessary foundation. Many graduates move into roles in human resources, mental health support, social work, market research, education, and the voluntary sector without additional training, applying their understanding of behaviour and research skills directly in professional settings.
