About this course

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, asking how people think, feel, perceive, learn, remember and act, and why they sometimes think, feel and act as they do not intend or expect. It draws on biology, neuroscience, philosophy, statistics and social science to build evidence-based accounts of human experience, from the electrical activity of individual neurons to the dynamics of groups, organisations and societies. Understanding how and why people behave as they do is not merely an academic exercise: it has direct relevance to health, education, justice, work, relationships and almost every domain of human life. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society, which means it provides the Graduate Basis for Chartership that is the starting point for most postgraduate routes into professional psychology. You will cover the core areas of the discipline, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, biological psychology, individual differences and research methods. Research methods and statistics are taught throughout the programme, because psychology is an empirical science and the ability to design studies, collect and analyse data, and evaluate evidence critically is central to what it means to think like a psychologist. Typical entry is around 104 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from BPS-accredited psychology degrees go on to a wide range of careers. Those who wish to work as clinical, educational, forensic, occupational or counselling psychologists will typically continue to postgraduate study and professional training. Others move directly into roles in human resources, market research, social research, public health, the NHS in non-clinical capacities, education, the legal system and social care. The analytical skills, statistical literacy and understanding of behaviour that psychology develops are broadly valued across employers in every sector.
