BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, asking how people think, feel, perceive, remember, learn, and act, and why they sometimes struggle to do any of these things well. It is a discipline that spans the biological underpinnings of mental processes and the social contexts in which behaviour unfolds, drawing on experimental research, clinical observation, and statistical analysis to understand what drives human experience. Its findings are relevant to virtually every aspect of life, from education and health to organisations and public policy. At Aston University, this three-year full-time programme covers the core areas that British Psychological Society accreditation requires: biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, individual differences, and research methods. Aston has a particular focus on applied and professional psychology, reflecting its broader mission as a university with strong links to industry and the professions. You will develop a strong grounding in research design and statistical analysis, which are fundamental to professional practice and further study in psychology, alongside the theoretical knowledge of the discipline's major fields. Psychology is one of the most popular degrees in the UK, and graduates move into a genuinely diverse range of careers. Those who want to practise as psychologists typically need further postgraduate training, whether in clinical, educational, forensic, occupational, or counselling psychology. But the research skills and understanding of human behaviour that the degree develops transfer broadly. Human resources, marketing, user experience research, education, social work, healthcare, and management consulting all employ psychology graduates. The analytical rigour of psychological research methods also makes graduates attractive for data-focused roles. Postgraduate study, whether in psychology or a related applied field, is a common next step.
