BA/BSc Psychology and Law
About this course
Psychology and law is a combination that addresses the human dimensions of the legal system from two powerful and complementary disciplines. Psychology provides frameworks for understanding perception, memory, decision-making, and behaviour, while law offers the formal rules, principles, and professional skills of legal reasoning, advocacy, and drafting. Together they illuminate how human psychology operates within legal contexts, from eyewitness testimony and jury decision-making to offender assessment and the psychology of legal practice. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme places research at the centre of the curriculum, developing your capacity to be a skilled, evidence-based thinker across both disciplines. The programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need additional preparation before degree-level study, as well as a sandwich year and a work placement, providing significant professional experience in both psychological and legal settings. You will develop psychological research skills alongside the legal competencies that the profession requires, including drafting, advocacy, interviewing, and negotiation. The combination of theoretical depth and practical training makes the degree genuinely career-ready. Graduates from psychology and law programmes are well placed for a wide range of careers. Many go on to train as solicitors or pursue further professional qualifications in law, while others enter careers in forensic and clinical psychology, the probation service, victim support, social work, policing, and criminal justice. The degree is also a strong foundation for postgraduate study in either law or psychology.
