BA Professional Policing
About this course
Professional Policing has become an increasingly graduate-level profession, reflecting the complexity of the demands placed on police officers in a modern, diverse and digital society. It requires the ability to make sound decisions under pressure, to investigate complex situations, to engage sensitively with communities and to uphold the law with integrity. A degree in Professional Policing prepares you for those demands by combining academic understanding of crime, law, ethics and society with practical skills developed through scenario-based training. At Birmingham Newman University this three-year full-time BA is aligned with the national Policing Education Qualifications Framework, ensuring that what you study matches the professional requirements for a career in UK policing. You will work in purpose-built simulation suites that replicate the kinds of situations police officers encounter, learning investigation techniques, decision-making processes and digital forensics skills. Academic tutors work alongside serving officers to give you both the intellectual grounding and the operational perspective you need. The programme builds resilience, professional confidence and the practical skills to make a meaningful contribution from the outset of a policing career. The degree is designed as a direct route into police service, and many graduates go on to apply for officer roles across forces in England and Wales, where a policing degree can count towards the required qualification. Beyond frontline policing, the skills and knowledge the degree develops, including investigation, risk assessment, law, ethics and community engagement, are also valued in roles across the criminal justice system, border force, customs and enforcement, security services, probation and social services. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in criminology, criminal justice, law or public policy.
