About this course
Product design is the discipline concerned with creating objects and systems that work well, look good, and respond to real human needs. It sits at the intersection of engineering, aesthetics, and social understanding, requiring designers to move between technical problem-solving and creative concept development while keeping the user at the centre of every decision. The field encompasses consumer electronics, furniture, medical devices, packaging, transportation, and the vast landscape of everyday objects, as well as the digital interfaces that are increasingly part of product experience. The University of Northampton's four-year full-time degree in product design includes a foundation year, giving students who need to build their creative and technical foundations a supported pathway into the main degree. The foundation year develops your design thinking, drawing skills, and understanding of materials before you engage with the more complex design and engineering content of the degree. You will study design process and methodology, sketching and visualisation, computer-aided design, materials science and manufacturing processes, ergonomics, sustainability, and professional practice, developing both the creative confidence to generate ideas and the technical ability to make them real. The programme encourages you to engage with real design problems and to build a portfolio that demonstrates your range and capability. Product design graduates go on to work as product designers, industrial designers, UX designers, design consultants, design managers, and in research and development roles across a wide range of manufacturing and technology sectors. Many graduates find roles in consumer goods, automotive, healthcare, electronics, and furniture, while others move into design consultancies or establish independent practices. Postgraduate study in product design, design engineering, or innovation management is a natural path for those who want to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic careers in design.
