BA Primary Education with QTS (5-11 years)
About this course
Primary education is about much more than delivering lessons. Teachers working with children aged five to eleven shape the foundations on which all later learning is built, developing not just literacy and numeracy but curiosity, confidence, social skills and a child's sense of what they are capable of. It is a profession that requires both broad subject knowledge and an understanding of how children learn, grow and differ from one another. The best primary teaching is thoughtful, creative and grounded in a genuine care for children's development. This three-year full-time programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status, qualifying you to teach in primary schools in England. At Brighton, you will prepare to work across Key Stages 1 and 2, covering the full five-to-eleven age range. Your studies will combine educational theory with substantial time spent in schools, where you will develop your teaching practice under the guidance of experienced professionals. You will study the National Curriculum subjects in depth, paying particular attention to the foundation areas of English and mathematics, and you will develop your understanding of child development, inclusion, assessment and classroom management. The programme is grounded in the view that early teaching experiences are formative, both for the children you teach and for you as a developing professional. On graduating with QTS, you will be qualified to apply for teaching posts in state-maintained primary schools across England. Many graduates take on responsibilities beyond the classroom early in their careers, moving into subject leadership, special educational needs coordination or pastoral roles. With experience, career progression into middle leadership, senior leadership and headship is a natural direction. Some graduates also move into educational consultancy, curriculum development or roles in initial teacher training and education research.
