Primary education with qualified teacher status for the early years and Key Stage 1 is one of the most formative teaching roles available. Children between the ages of three and seven are at a critical point in their development: they are learning to read and write, developing their relationship with numbers, forming social bonds, building emotional regulation and establishing habits of learning that will shape their entire educational journey. Teachers in this phase play a central role in that process, and the quality of their practice has lasting effects that extend well beyond the classroom. At the University of Brighton you will study primary education over three years of full-time study, graduating with both a degree and qualified teacher status that allows you to teach children from the foundation stage through to Key Stage 1. You will develop the subject knowledge, pedagogical skills and professional judgement needed to support children's literacy, numeracy, and social, emotional and physical development across this age range. The programme addresses child development theory, curriculum design, inclusive practice, assessment and the professional responsibilities of teaching, alongside extensive school-based training. The typical tariff of 136 reflects the academic and professional demands of a programme that leads directly to a regulated professional qualification. Graduates qualify as primary school teachers and most move directly into employment in maintained schools, academies, free schools and independent settings. Within early career teaching there are clear progression routes towards subject leadership, special educational needs coordination, phase leadership and ultimately headship. Some graduates go on to further study or research in education, early childhood studies or pedagogy.
