MA Portuguese/ Social & Public Policy
About this course
Portuguese and social and public policy is a degree combination that pairs one of the world's most widely spoken languages with one of the most practically urgent areas of social analysis. Portuguese is the native language of over two hundred million people, spoken across Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and several other countries, and it provides access to cultures and economies of enormous and growing global significance. Social and public policy applies ideas from political science, sociology, and economics to understand how governments shape their responses to social challenges such as poverty and inequality, housing, health, and environmental sustainability, asking both how policies are made and how effective they are. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year, full-time programme develops your Portuguese to a high level alongside a rigorous grounding in social and public policy analysis. A sandwich year is incorporated, giving you the opportunity for a substantial professional placement in a policy, research, or public sector organisation, and work placements are embedded throughout the course. A typical entry tariff of 216 points reflects the high academic standard of this programme at one of Scotland's leading research universities. Graduates are well placed for careers in government and public administration, international development organisations, NGOs working in Portuguese-speaking countries, social research, policy analysis, journalism, and international business in Brazil and other Lusophone markets. The combination of Portuguese language expertise and policy analytical skills is particularly valuable in development, humanitarian, and governance contexts where understanding how policy works in different national contexts is essential. Postgraduate study in social policy, development studies, Portuguese, or international relations is a well-supported further step.
