BA Politics with Foundation Year
About this course
Politics is the study of power: how it is acquired, exercised, contested and legitimised in societies of all kinds. From the institutions of democratic government and the dynamics of international relations to the ideological conflicts that have shaped modern history and the policy processes through which public problems are addressed, politics asks fundamental questions about how we live together and who gets to decide. It is a discipline that combines analytical rigour with engagement with some of the most important questions of our time. The University of Portsmouth's politics programme includes a foundation element that provides a thorough academic grounding before the main degree content begins, making it an excellent route for students who would benefit from this additional preparation. The full degree runs over four years of full-time study, incorporating a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and a work placement, meaning you graduate with a combination of academic knowledge and substantial professional and international experience that is considerably richer than a standard three-year programme can provide. The academic content covers political theory, comparative politics, UK politics and institutions, international relations and research methods, developing both the conceptual frameworks and the empirical knowledge to analyse political systems and events with confidence. Politics develops analytical clarity, the ability to evaluate competing arguments and evidence, skill in constructing well-reasoned positions on contested questions, and strong written and oral communication. These are capabilities that prove valuable across an exceptionally wide range of careers. Graduates work in politics and government, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, public affairs and lobbying, the charity and non-governmental sector, law, education, business and finance. The combination of academic political analysis with the placement year, year abroad and work experience positions you well for roles that require both intellectual confidence and practical competence. Postgraduate study in politics, international relations, public policy or law is also a well-trodden path for ambitious graduates.
