About this course
Politics, international studies and Italian is an intellectually wide-ranging combination that equips you to engage with political life at every scale, from national institutions to global governance, through both analytical and linguistic lenses. Politics and international studies provides the theoretical and empirical frameworks to understand how power operates within and between states, how international institutions function, how security and conflict are managed and how global challenges from climate change to human rights are addressed. Italian adds a specific cultural and linguistic entry point into one of Europe's most historically rich and politically complex countries, while also developing broader intercultural communication skills. At the University of Warwick, this four-year degree develops your ability to critically examine political issues through a culturally sensitive lens, alongside your Italian language skills and understanding of Italian culture and society, as Warwick's own description summarises. You will study political theory, comparative politics, international relations and security, as well as the specific political history and contemporary politics of Italy. The Italian strand develops your language to an advanced level alongside engagement with Italian literature, culture and society. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placements, providing structured routes to develop professional experience before your final year. Warwick develops in students the skills of theoretical analysis, qualitative and quantitative research and strong written and verbal communication, all of which are valued across many professional contexts. The combination of political analysis and Italian language makes graduates particularly distinctive. Graduates go on to careers in diplomacy, European institutions, international organisations, politics and public affairs, journalism, the civil service, research, education, translation and international business. Further study in politics, international relations, Italian or a related field is also common.
