About this course

Politics and religion, theology, and spirituality is a combination that examines two of the most fundamental forces shaping human societies: the organisation and exercise of political power, and the religious beliefs, practices, and traditions that have inspired, constrained, and challenged political authority throughout history and up to the present day. Politics examines how power is organised and contested, how ideologies compete, and how states and other institutions manage conflict and cooperation. Religion, theology, and spirituality explores the major religious traditions and the philosophical and ethical questions they engage, asking what role faith plays in contemporary social, political, and cultural life. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who benefit from additional academic preparation, alongside a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. Liverpool's religious and cultural diversity, its two cathedrals, its history of faith-driven social movements, and its vibrant multicultural communities make it an ideal city for this combination. You will engage with the major world religious traditions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, as well as contemporary spiritualities, alongside the theoretical and empirical content of political science. The programme explores how religion shapes politics, how politics shapes religion, and what the connections between faith, ethics, and public life look like in practice. You will develop analytical, research, and argumentative skills across both disciplines, alongside the intercultural and reflective capacities that engagement with religious and political diversity demands. Graduates from politics and religion programmes pursue careers in government, the civil service, international organisations, NGOs, journalism, chaplaincy, faith-based social action, education, and a range of other fields. Postgraduate study in politics, theology, religious studies, or public policy is a natural continuation.
