About this course

Politics and International Relations examines how power is organised, exercised and contested at every level from local government to global governance. Political science studies the institutions, ideologies and processes through which collective decisions are made within states, while international relations examines how states, international organisations and non-state actors interact across borders to manage questions of security, trade, cooperation and justice. Together, they provide the analytical tools to understand the complex political environment of the contemporary world and to engage with it as a professional. At Edge Hill University, this part-time programme is designed and delivered with input from political practitioners, ensuring that the curriculum is grounded in the realities of political life rather than purely academic concerns. You will develop the skills needed to engage with politics, policy-making and political research in ways that create real professional value, whether in politics itself, the civil service, international relations, the third sector or related fields. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience that complements your academic studies. Politics and International Relations graduates go on to careers in government and the civil service, political parties, international organisations, journalism, public affairs and lobbying, think tanks, policy research, NGOs, international development, human rights advocacy and academic research. The analytical skills and global awareness the degree develops are also valued in the private sector, particularly in international business, consulting and financial services. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in political science, international relations, public policy or law, deepening their specialist knowledge for careers at the most demanding levels of public and international life.
