MA Politics and European Languages
About this course
Politics and European languages is a combination that equips you to engage with the world not just analytically but linguistically, recognising that understanding how power works in different societies is deepened enormously by being able to read, speak, and think in the languages those societies use. European politics is increasingly interconnected, and the ability to navigate debates in a foreign language, to read original policy documents and political texts, and to communicate directly with people from other countries, is a genuine asset in any career that involves international engagement. At Dundee, this four-year full-time MA programme allows you to study politics alongside a European language, building your understanding of conflict, cooperation, and the growing significance of non-state actors in the contemporary world. The politics element gives you the tools to analyse complex political relationships and institutions, while the language strand develops your written and spoken fluency alongside an understanding of the cultures and societies in which your chosen language is spoken. In the later years of the programme you will have the opportunity to specialise, deepening your expertise in particular areas of politics or particular aspects of your chosen language and culture. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the experience of living and studying in a European country and developing your language skills in an immersive context. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points. Graduates move into careers in the diplomatic service, international organisations, the civil service, journalism, NGOs, European institutions, business, and public affairs. The combination of political analytical skills and genuine language ability is particularly valuable for employers who operate across national borders. Postgraduate study in European politics, international relations, area studies, or languages is also a well-established next step.
