BSc Physics with Astrophysics
About this course
Physics and astrophysics together span the extraordinary range from the smallest known structures, the elementary particles that constitute all matter, to the largest, the galaxies, galaxy clusters, and the observable universe as a whole. Physics provides the mathematical and conceptual tools: quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and relativity. Astrophysics applies them to understanding how stars form and die, what dark matter and dark energy are, how black holes behave, and where the universe came from. The combination is intellectually demanding and deeply rewarding, requiring you to think rigorously about phenomena that are often wildly counterintuitive. This programme at the University of Nottingham includes a foundation year, providing a structured academic preparation for students who bring strong potential but benefit from additional support before entering the main degree. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific grounding needed to succeed in the subsequent three years of physics with astrophysics study. You will engage with both the experimental and theoretical dimensions of physics, developing the capacity to model physical systems, interpret observational data, and reason carefully under conditions of genuine uncertainty. The full programme runs over four years full-time. Graduates of physics with astrophysics degrees are among the most sought-after in the graduate market, because the quantitative and problem-solving skills the discipline develops are valued across a remarkable range of fields. Many go into careers in engineering, computing, data science, finance, and technology. Others pursue postgraduate research in physics, astrophysics, cosmology, or related disciplines. A smaller number go into science communication, education, or the space industry, where the combination of technical knowledge and public engagement is increasingly valued.
