MPhys Physics with Astrophysics (Industrial)
About this course
Physics with astrophysics takes the rigorous mathematical and scientific training of a physics degree and extends it into the cosmos, engaging with the processes, structures, and phenomena that govern matter and energy on the largest scales we can observe. Astrophysics explores the life cycles of stars, the dynamics of galaxies, the physics of black holes, the search for planets around other stars, and the origin and evolution of the universe itself. It is a field that combines the most fundamental physical theory with some of the most ambitious observational and experimental programmes in the history of science. At the University of Leeds, this five-year industrial programme includes both a sandwich year in industry and a thorough grounding in the core areas of physics and astrophysics. You will study classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and statistical physics alongside astrophysical topics including stellar physics, cosmology, galactic structure, and observational techniques. The sandwich year is central to the programme's design, giving you a full year of professional experience in an industrial, research, or technology organisation before your final year. This direct exposure to how physics is applied professionally is one of the most valuable aspects of the degree, and it gives you a significant advantage in the graduate job market. Work placement provision is built in throughout the course. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates of physics with astrophysics programmes go on to remarkably diverse careers. Research in astronomy and astrophysics at doctoral level is a natural path for those drawn to academic science. The analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also highly valued in technology, data science, finance, defence, aerospace, and energy. Many graduates use their physics training in careers quite different from astrophysics, finding that the rigorous scientific education is transferable across a wide range of industries and professional contexts.
