About this course

Photography is one of the most culturally pervasive of the arts, and one of the most technically complex. Since its invention in the nineteenth century, photographic practice has transformed how we see and document the world, how we construct memory and identity, and how images are used in journalism, advertising, art, and social media. Studying photography seriously means engaging with both the practical and technical dimensions of image-making and the critical and theoretical frameworks that allow us to understand what photographs do and how they do it. At the University of Suffolk, this part-time programme allows you to explore the practices, technologies, and debates associated with the photographic image in depth. You will develop your ability to produce photographic work across a range of media and using techniques suited to the context and audience you are addressing. The philosophy of the course places a strong emphasis on individual identity and authorship, encouraging you to take risks and develop genuinely your own creative vision while also engaging critically and theoretically with the history and practice of photography. The part-time format allows you to develop your practice alongside other personal and professional commitments. Graduates of photography programmes work as professional photographers in editorial, commercial, portrait, documentary, and fine art contexts, alongside roles in photographic education, arts administration, gallery and museum curation, and digital content creation. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine commissioned work with personal projects. The visual intelligence, technical competence, and critical understanding the degree develops are also valuable in advertising, design, journalism, and the broader creative and media industries. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in photography, fine art, or visual culture, continuing to develop their practice and professional standing.
