BA Photography
About this course
Photography is both an art form and a communication medium of extraordinary versatility and cultural significance. It freezes moments, constructs narratives, documents reality, creates beauty, and serves commercial and journalistic purposes that range from the intimate to the global. A degree in photography goes beyond technical training to develop your understanding of the place of photographic work within art, commerce, culture, and communication, asking what photographs mean, what they do in the world, and how they can be made with intention and skill. This part-time programme at the University of Northampton develops your understanding of photography within leisure, commercial, and cultural contexts, giving you the analytical and practical foundations to work professionally across a wide range of photographic fields. You will explore the photograph within art, editorial, product and services, industry, communications, performance, and entertainment contexts, developing the versatility that professional practice demands. The programme emphasises independent skill development so that you graduate capable of working to client commissions and functioning as a professional photographer in your chosen area, with the confidence to manage your own creative practice. Photography graduates work across a wide range of professional contexts: photojournalism, fashion and commercial photography, documentary photography, fine art and gallery work, editorial media, advertising, corporate communications, social media content creation, and education. Many graduates build freelance careers, often specialising in one or two areas while retaining the versatility to take on varied commissions. Others move into studio and agency roles, or work in image editing, art direction, and visual communications. Further study at postgraduate level in photography, visual arts, or media is an option for those wishing to develop a research practice or specialise in fine art contexts.
