About this course
Photography has moved decisively from a technical craft into one of the central image-making disciplines of contemporary culture, shaping how we see the world, how stories are told, and how products, ideas, and people are presented to public audiences. Studying photography at university level means developing both technical mastery of the medium and the conceptual, historical, and critical frameworks needed to make and interpret images with intention and intelligence. The discipline spans fine art photography, editorial and documentary work, commercial and product photography, and the growing field of digital image-making, and a graduate photographer needs to be fluent across several of these registers. At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of photography across art, editorial, commercial, and cultural contexts, building both practical skill and the conceptual understanding needed to situate your work effectively in each. You will learn to work to client briefs and to professional standards, developing the independence and professional self-awareness needed to function in a competitive industry from graduation. The programme explores photography within leisure, commercial, communications, performance, and entertainment contexts, and encourages you to understand the impact that photographic work can have and the change it can inspire. Technical skills in both analogue and digital processes are developed alongside critical and historical knowledge of photographic practice. Photography graduates enter careers across a wide range of professional contexts. Editorial and documentary photographers work for newspapers, magazines, news agencies, and in the growing digital media landscape. Commercial photographers work with brands, advertising agencies, and product companies. Fine art photographers exhibit and develop studio practices, often in combination with teaching or arts education roles. Photography skills are also valued in film and television production, social media management, content creation, and visual communications. Many graduates build varied portfolio careers across several of these areas, and the degree's focus on professional practice and client-facing work is designed to support that flexibility.
