BA Photography
About this course
Photography is both a technical craft and a visual language. It involves understanding light, optics, and image-making processes, but equally, it requires the ability to frame a subject, tell a story, and communicate ideas that go beyond what words can easily convey. Across fine art, documentary, commercial, editorial, and fashion contexts, photographers bring distinctive vision and skill to the question of what is worth showing and how. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time BA encourages you to develop a distinctive identity as an image maker. You will build technical proficiency alongside imaginative approaches to the medium, learning to challenge conventions and push beyond straightforward documentation towards work that is critically informed and visually compelling. The course develops you as a thoughtful creative practitioner, aware of the history and theory of photography and capable of applying that awareness in your own practice. Because this programme includes both a foundation year and a sandwich year, you have the opportunity to establish strong technical and conceptual foundations before the main degree and to gain substantial professional experience in industry during the placement year. The programme also includes a year abroad and a work placement, all of which enrich your practice and make your graduate profile stronger in a competitive creative sector. Photography graduates work across a remarkably wide range of contexts. Commercial and editorial photography, advertising, fashion, documentary and photojournalism, fine art and gallery work, education, and the museum sector are all destinations open to skilled and thoughtful practitioners. The technical and creative skills developed during the degree also translate well into adjacent fields such as art direction, visual communication, film, and digital media production. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine different kinds of photographic practice. Those wishing to go further academically can progress to postgraduate programmes in photography, fine art, or visual culture.
