About this course

Photography is a medium with an extraordinary range of applications, from editorial and documentary work to fine art, fashion, commercial, and scientific imaging. As both a technical and an artistic practice, it demands a thorough understanding of optical and digital processes alongside a developed visual language and the ability to make deliberate, purposeful choices about how the world is framed and represented. Studying photography at degree level combines the development of technical skill with critical engagement with the history, theory, and social role of the photographic image. At the University of Brighton this three-year full-time programme prepares you for creative and professional paths including editorial, documentary, fashion, and commercial photography, as well as roles in curatorial, editorial, and art direction contexts. You will develop your technical skills in digital and analogue photography alongside a critical understanding of photographic history, theory, and practice, and you will build a portfolio that demonstrates both your technical competence and your creative voice. A sandwich year and a work placement are incorporated into the programme, giving you professional experience in a photographic or visual media environment and the industry connections that matter when you graduate. Photography graduates work across a wide range of sectors, including editorial and news media, advertising, publishing, fashion, the arts, and digital content creation. Many develop freelance practices, building portfolios and client relationships across commercial and personal work. Others move into photography editing, curatorial roles, arts management, and digital content production for organisations and brands. The visual literacy and critical thinking developed through a photography degree are also valued in related creative fields. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in photography, fine art, or visual culture, deepening their practice or moving into research and teaching.
