BA Philosophy with Foundation Year
About this course
Philosophy is the oldest and most fundamental of the academic disciplines, concerned with questions that cannot be resolved by experiment or empirical investigation alone: what is knowledge and how is it possible, what is the nature of mind and consciousness, what makes actions right or wrong, whether God exists, whether we have free will, and what standards of beauty and justice should guide human life. These questions matter not just as intellectual exercises but because how we answer them shapes how we understand ourselves and how we organise our shared life together. At Birkbeck College in London, this part-time programme, which also includes a foundation year option for those who need additional preparation, is designed for students who want to engage seriously with these fundamental questions while managing other commitments. Birkbeck's tradition of flexible, evening-based teaching makes it possible to study philosophy at a serious academic level without sacrificing work or family commitments. You will explore ancient answers and new perspectives on some of the most important questions available to human reason, engaging with analytic and continental traditions, with historical and contemporary philosophy, and with the full range of philosophical sub-disciplines from ethics and political philosophy through epistemology and metaphysics to the philosophy of mind and language. Graduates from philosophy programmes go on to careers in law, the civil service, journalism, education, management consulting, public policy, research, and many other fields that value rigorous analytical thinking and clear communication. The skills developed through philosophy, including the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments, to think clearly about concepts, and to engage honestly with competing viewpoints, are genuinely transferable across virtually any career. Many graduates continue to postgraduate or doctoral study in philosophy, law, or related disciplines, building on the undergraduate foundation for advanced specialist work.
