BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy asks the questions that other disciplines tend to take for granted. What can we know with confidence, and how do we know it? What makes an action right or wrong? What is the nature of mind, of language, of reality itself? These are not idle puzzles but foundational enquiries that shape how we reason about everything else, from science and ethics to politics and the arts. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, you can study philosophy on a part-time basis, giving you the flexibility to engage with the subject alongside other commitments while still working through its central questions with proper depth and care. You will encounter the major traditions in Western philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and the philosophy of mind, reading thinkers who have shaped intellectual life across centuries and engaging critically with arguments that remain live and contested today. The discipline trains you to analyse complex texts, construct careful arguments, identify hidden assumptions, and present reasoning clearly and persuasively, skills that are transferable across almost any intellectual or professional domain. Studying part-time means you progress through fewer units per week than full-time students, giving you more time to engage with demanding material and to connect philosophical ideas to your own experience and interests. Philosophy graduates are found in a remarkably wide range of careers. The analytical and communicative skills developed through philosophical study are valued in law, public policy, journalism, education, the civil service, and management, as well as in technology and data ethics roles that have grown significantly in recent years. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, ethics, or related humanities disciplines. For those who want to think more carefully and rigorously about the fundamental questions, studying philosophy part-time at UHI offers a serious and rewarding route into the discipline.
