About this course

Philosophy, politics and ethics is a combination that addresses some of the most important and difficult questions that face individuals and societies: how should we live, how should power be organised and exercised, and what do we owe each other? Philosophy provides the tools of rigorous argument, conceptual analysis and critical reasoning. Politics examines how institutions, ideologies and power structures operate in the real world, from local councils to international organisations. Ethics applies philosophical thinking to concrete moral questions, asking how we should respond to global challenges such as climate change, artificial intelligence, inequality and conflict. Together these three disciplines equip you to think seriously about what matters and why. At the University of Brighton this three-year, full-time programme engages directly with today's global challenges, bringing philosophical rigour, political analysis and ethical reasoning to bear on the urgent questions of our time. You will study the history of political thought alongside contemporary political theory, examine ethical frameworks from consequentialism to virtue ethics, and develop the critical reading and argumentative writing skills that characterise the best philosophical and political thinking. The programme includes a sandwich year placement and work placements, giving you the opportunity to apply your learning in professional contexts such as policy, the third sector, journalism or public service. This combination of intellectual training and direct experience is a strong foundation for a wide range of careers. Graduates pursue careers in the civil service and public policy, politics and campaigning, journalism, law, international organisations, NGOs and charities, think tanks, education, healthcare ethics, human rights work and research. The ability to think clearly about complex problems, argue persuasively and evaluate competing claims is valued across virtually every professional field. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, politics, ethics, law, international relations or public policy.
