About this course

Philosophy, politics, and economics, taken together, offer one of the most powerful combinations of disciplines available at university. Philosophy develops the capacity to think clearly, construct arguments, and evaluate the foundations of our beliefs and values. Politics gives you the frameworks to understand how power operates, how institutions are designed, and how collective decisions are made. Economics provides the analytical tools to understand how resources, incentives, and markets shape the choices of individuals and the outcomes of societies. The three disciplines are deeply interconnected, and the questions they share, about justice, power, and welfare, are among the most important in public life. At Sheffield you will engage with all three disciplines seriously, developing skills in analytical reasoning, empirical research, and written argument. You will explore philosophical ethics and political theory alongside macroeconomics, microeconomics, and the study of political institutions and behaviour. Pressing global challenges, whether climate change, economic inequality, or international conflict, are examined from multiple angles, drawing on each discipline's distinctive tools. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you direct professional experience and the chance to develop an international perspective on the political and economic forces you are studying. PPE is a degree with an exceptional track record for careers in public life. Graduates go into politics, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, consultancy, banking, law, NGOs, and think tanks. The combination of rigorous analytical thinking and broad intellectual range is among the most valuable preparations for careers that involve understanding and influencing how society is organised. Many students continue to postgraduate study in economics, politics, philosophy, law, or public policy.
