BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is the discipline of careful, rigorous thinking about the most fundamental questions in human experience. It asks what we can know and how we can know it, what exists and what the nature of reality is, how we should live and what makes actions right or wrong, what justice requires in political and social arrangements, and how language and thought relate to the world. These are not abstract puzzles disconnected from everyday life: they are the questions that underlie every other discipline and every significant practical decision, and engaging with them seriously develops habits of mind that are among the most valuable a university education can cultivate. Studied part-time at Manchester Metropolitan University, this degree is designed to develop not only knowledge of philosophy's long intellectual history but the independent thinking, clear communication, and persuasive argument that philosophical practice requires. You will engage with the major traditions of Western philosophy alongside contemporary work in ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, logic, and epistemology, developing the analytical rigour to identify assumptions, evaluate evidence, and construct well-reasoned positions. A sandwich year with work placement is incorporated into the programme, providing direct professional experience alongside your academic study and connecting philosophical thinking to applied professional contexts. The placement is a significant feature of a degree whose relevance extends across virtually every sector of professional life. Philosophy graduates are among the most versatile of all graduates, and consistently perform well in competitive recruitment across many industries. Common careers include roles in law, management consultancy, the civil service, public policy, finance, journalism, education, and technology. The skills of logical analysis, precise writing, and structured argument that philosophy develops are valued wherever decisions need to be made carefully and communicated clearly. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, politics, ethics, or related disciplines, building deeper expertise for academic or senior professional roles.
