BA Philosophy and Linguistics
About this course
Philosophy and Linguistics at Oxford is one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding combinations available in the humanities. Philosophy asks the deepest questions about knowledge, reality, mind, ethics, and the nature of rationality. Linguistics is the scientific study of language: its structure, its acquisition, its diversity across human communities, and its relationship to thought and meaning. The two disciplines converge on some of the most fundamental and fascinating questions in all of intellectual inquiry. What is the relationship between language and thought? Can the same proposition be expressed in every language? What makes something a meaningful utterance rather than mere noise? How do we communicate so much with so little? At the University of Oxford, this three-year full-time programme is taught through the tutorial system, placing you in sustained intellectual dialogue with leading scholars in both fields. You will study formal logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics alongside the phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of natural language. The degree is mathematically and logically rigorous in ways that distinguish it from many other philosophy programmes, and the linguistics content engages with formal linguistic theory at a high level. Oxford's philosophy and linguistics departments are among the strongest in the world. Philosophy and Linguistics graduates from Oxford enter an exceptionally competitive market with credentials that open virtually every door. Academic careers in philosophy, linguistics, or cognitive science are common aspirations, and Oxford's research environment is an excellent springboard. Law, the civil service, technology companies working on natural language processing and AI, data science, and policy research all value the combination of rigorous reasoning and linguistic expertise. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, linguistics, computational linguistics, or cognitive science, and the Oxford background is a strong foundation for doctoral work at leading institutions worldwide.
