About this course

Philosophy and history are disciplines that complement each other in ways that are not always obvious at first glance. History is the study of the past, but it is also a discipline deeply concerned with questions that are philosophical at their root: how do we know what happened? What counts as evidence? How do we explain human action? What is the relationship between the individual and the wider forces of society and circumstance? Philosophy engages with these questions directly, as well as addressing the foundational questions of ethics, metaphysics, knowledge and logic that underpin all rigorous intellectual enquiry. Studying them together develops an unusually sharp critical mind. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year full-time programme gives you the time to develop genuine depth in both disciplines. UHI is a distinctive institution with a federated structure across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, bringing a particular cultural and geographical perspective to questions of history and human experience. You will study the history of Scotland, Britain and the wider world alongside the core areas of philosophy, developing your skills in argument, evidence and interpretation across both fields. The programme develops your ability to read complex texts carefully, to construct and evaluate arguments, to write with precision and clarity, and to engage seriously with multiple perspectives on difficult questions. These are skills that are directly applicable across a very wide range of professional contexts. Graduates of philosophy and history combinations move into careers in education, the civil service, law, journalism, public affairs, heritage, research, publishing and the voluntary sector. Many go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, history, law or education. The combination of analytical rigour and historical understanding is particularly valued in contexts where clear thinking and the ability to engage with complex evidence matter.
