MPharm Pharmacy
About this course
Pharmacy is the health profession dedicated to the science and practice of medicines. Pharmacists are the healthcare professionals with the deepest expertise in how drugs work, how they interact with each other and with individual patients, and how they should be used safely and effectively. In a healthcare system that depends increasingly on complex medication regimens, personalised medicine and the safe use of powerful therapeutic agents, the pharmacist's role has never been more important. At the University of Sunderland, the four-year full-time MPharm degree combines rigorous scientific study with clinical and professional training, developing your expertise in pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmacy practice and the evidence base for therapeutic decision-making. You will learn how medicines are designed and developed, how they are formulated and dispensed, how the body handles them, and how to counsel patients on their use. Clinical placements are integrated throughout the programme, giving you practical experience in community and hospital pharmacy settings. Sunderland's pharmacy programme is designed to develop not just scientific knowledge but the professional confidence and communication skills that effective pharmacy practice requires. Pharmacists speak directly with patients who are managing complex health conditions, and the ability to explain medication, identify potential problems and support adherence is as important as the underlying science. Graduation from the MPharm leads to eligibility to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council, subject to completion of a foundation training year in practice. The profession offers strong employment prospects and a structured career pathway, with opportunities to develop clinical specialist roles, management responsibilities or academic and research careers. Beyond community and hospital practice, pharmacy graduates work in the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory agencies, medicines information services and healthcare consulting.
