For those who want to turn a passion for the outdoors into a professional vocation, it is a demanding and rewarding field. At the University of Cumbria, located in one of the UK's most spectacular landscapes, this three-year full-time degree combines theoretical study with extensive practical experience. You will develop expertise in a range of adventurous land and water-based activities, learning to plan, facilitate, and debrief outdoor experiences at a professional level. Academic study in education, leadership, psychology, and environmental science underpins your practical development, giving you frameworks for understanding what outdoor education achieves and why. The programme is taught by staff with a genuine passion for the outdoors and significant experience in the sector, and you will graduate with transferable skills including communication, confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving that are valued well beyond the outdoor industry. Graduates go on to careers as outdoor leaders, adventure sport coaches, outdoor education practitioners, youth workers, and in roles within national parks, conservation organisations, and activity centres.
