About this course

Oral health science is concerned with the assessment, prevention and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the mouth, teeth and surrounding tissues. It is a discipline that sits within the wider health sciences, drawing on anatomy, physiology, microbiology and biochemistry to understand oral health and disease, and on clinical and communication skills to deliver effective care to patients. Oral health professionals play a central role in preventive dentistry, working with patients and communities to reduce the burden of dental disease and promote overall health. This part-time degree at the University of the Highlands and Islands is delivered in a blended mode, combining in-person attendance at a local campus or learning centre with digital access to classes and materials, work-based activity for industry experience, and learning at partner locations off campus. This flexible delivery is well suited to students who are working in dental or healthcare settings and wish to develop their knowledge and qualifications alongside practice. You will study the science underpinning oral health and disease, clinical assessment and prevention approaches, patient communication and the public health dimensions of oral health promotion, with practical experience integrated throughout the programme. Graduates are prepared for professional roles in dental therapy, dental hygiene, oral health promotion and related fields within NHS and private dental settings and in community and public health contexts. Those who wish to achieve clinical registration will need to ensure the programme meets the requirements of the relevant professional body.
