About this course

Adult nursing is the largest and most varied field within nursing, encompassing care for people with acute illness, chronic conditions, disabilities and end-of-life needs across hospital, community and specialist settings. Nurses are the constant presence in patients' lives, offering care, reassurance and clinical expertise at moments of vulnerability and uncertainty. Adult nurses practise across a wide range of environments and specialties, from surgical and medical wards through to intensive care, accident and emergency, community nursing, care homes and palliative care, developing deep clinical knowledge alongside the interpersonal skills that effective nursing demands. At Glasgow Caledonian University this programme runs full time over four years, reflecting the Scottish undergraduate degree structure and the depth of preparation required for professional nursing registration. You will develop the clinical knowledge, professional skills and personal qualities needed to practise safely and effectively as a Registered Nurse, studying across the biological sciences underpinning nursing, the assessment and management of a wide range of health conditions, pharmacology, mental health, person-centred care, leadership and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern nursing practice. Clinical placements across multiple settings are integral to the degree, placing you in real care environments under professional supervision throughout your training. You will develop the technical clinical skills, therapeutic communication abilities, professional judgement and personal resilience that characterise excellent nursing practice. Glasgow Caledonian's location in Scotland's largest city provides access to a diverse range of clinical placement opportunities across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and beyond. Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as Registered Nurses and work across NHS Scotland and beyond. Career progression leads to specialist practice, advanced clinical roles, leadership, education and nursing research.
