BSc Nursing (Mental Health)
About this course
Mental health nursing is a specialist nursing field dedicated to supporting people experiencing mental illness, emotional distress, and the challenges of living with conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and personality disorders. It is a profession that requires both clinical knowledge and exceptional interpersonal skill: mental health nurses work in therapeutic relationships with people who are often highly vulnerable, and the ability to communicate with compassion, empathy, and professional confidence is as important as clinical expertise. The profession has expanded significantly in recent years as recognition of the scale and importance of mental health need has grown. At the University of York, this three-year full-time degree prepares you for professional registration as a mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme has an innovative design that develops your clinical knowledge alongside the therapeutic and relational skills that are central to mental health nursing practice. A sandwich year and a year abroad option are incorporated into the degree, alongside a work placement, providing professional experience in mental health settings and, for those who choose the international option, exposure to how mental health nursing is practised in different cultural and healthcare contexts. York's strong research environment in health sciences adds academic depth to the programme. Mental health nursing graduates work in inpatient psychiatric units, community mental health teams, crisis resolution services, early intervention teams, eating disorder services, and forensic mental health settings. With experience and further training, nurses progress into specialist, advanced practice, team leadership, and research roles. The profession has strong demand and a genuine sense of vocational purpose, and many mental health nurses describe their work as among the most meaningful they could do. The typical entry tariff is 120 points.
