Mental health problems affect a very large part of the population at some point in their lives, and mental health nurses are among the most important professionals providing support, treatment, and advocacy to people experiencing conditions that can be profoundly disabling and stigmatised. At Derby, this programme is designed for those who are caring and compassionate, with strong communication skills and a genuine commitment to helping people. The degree is studied full-time over three years and includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional academic preparation before the main programme, making the full course four years. The foundation year is designed to build the knowledge, confidence, and academic skills that will help you succeed in the nursing programme. You will study psychiatric theory and practice, psychopharmacology, therapeutic relationships, risk assessment, and recovery approaches, alongside substantial clinical placement experience in a range of mental health settings. The typical entry tariff for direct entry is 120 points. Registered mental health nurses work across inpatient, community, and specialist settings in the NHS and the independent sector, including forensic services, child and adolescent mental health teams, crisis and home treatment teams, and substance misuse services. The profession offers structured career development, with routes into specialist clinical practice, management, education, and research. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in areas such as cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy, mental health leadership, or advanced clinical practice as their careers develop.
